My Comments

  • While I think there are some businesses that can benefit from them digital business cards are simply no longer a good investment. It would be much better to invest in something like a commerce or showcase website from a digital agency and simply sue standard business cards to get it across to people.
  • Interesting guide, thanks. How common do you think digital business cards are becoming and do you think the cost of producing them (in comparison to normal business cards). Do you also think digital design matters as much with digital business cards or do you feel it is a supplementary feature? Personally I think it's still very important, an attractive design is more likely to make someone go home and play the DVD.
  • While working with a CMS is a great idea for charities and the like we prefer to form a partnership. We often do content updates and development for them on a basic level for free as long as it is not damaging the business. While CMS is fantastic it still requires someone who knows what they are doing, maybe even someone trained up and non-profits don't always have this resource. An interesting thing is working with charities on digital marketing, they need to psuh their brand jsut like every company and the market displays some interesting oppurtunities for people willing to work with chariyties rather than just SMBs.
  • People often overlook the importance of keeping people on a page, the amount of sites I have seen that bring in visitors only to loose them right away. The split testing with Google is a great idea but if you are inexperienced in these matters I would consider hiring a digital marketing agency to help you.
  • Graphic Design - 10/27/2008
Some great graphic design site recommendations in that guide but I would say you would be better searching for a freelancer I would recommend searching Google or speaking with friends or business partners who have tried graphic design agency''s
  • There are some really good points in this guide, number three is especially important for small and medium business as many complications arise when designers have to get all the information themselves. If you are with a professional web design agency then they should attempt to gain this information before the project is built.
  • This is a really good article, informative and easy to understand and no stupid selly text for some OTT scam scheme. I saw some similar techniques on a make money site a few days ago although their article was not quite as well presented as your it looks as though the technique is supported across the board.
  • A well written article that is both informative and useful. I also agree that page load time is one of the most important features of website in modern web design. Great effects do impress people but if they click off before it loads it's largely irrelevant. A big problem that lots of people don't notice is that script increases page load time as well as objects. Hopefully as the Internet evolves more of this stuff will become unused or Internet speeds will increase so that it simply doesn't matter, digital design agencies could make some starting sites if there really were no limits.
  • I am in 100% agreement about the cost of web design work being a less significant factor. As a company, any client should expect that developing their brand identity cost money and that £200 is not a worthwhile investment It is difficult to communicate this to everyone though, understandably so as many small to medium businesses have been ripped off by the "brother in law" character, I think a step forward is to try and explain to business managers exactly what the disadvantages of going with a poor company is instead of stating the advantages of your digital design agency.
  • Really nice article, it's well laid out and informative and I think a little more direct than lots of the other articles on the same subject. One point I would raise is that SEO is not always a bad thing there is a lot to be said about incorporating SEO into a digital marketing campaign but as you mention, not at the cost of the rest of the project
  • Flow in Web Design - 02/14/2008
Hey, thanks for your comment. The retails site Play.com seems to have a good flow to it. Notice how if you choose something, add it to basket, log -in, purchase and confirm the order its clicking a similar sized, shaped, coloured button positioned in the middle of your screen every time, this means you don't have to think about completing any of the actions, it almost become a heuristic to people who buy there on a regular basis. YouTube also has good flow built into it's design, you can actually go between things you want without ever touching the keyboard, click an interesting video from homepage, it loads and plays itself, when it's finished it suggested similar videos in the same visual space as well as related videos to the author on the right and popular videos (i think) across the bottom. In contrast a website with bad flow is the Yahho (UK at least) homepage. It has so much copy you struggle to see a natural progression through the site and that is mainly because there isn't one. I am not having a go at Yahoo, they have to hit a lot of niche buttons with one homepage it just lacks the concept discussed in this article greatly.
