Good points Amy. I am sure many folks will find this helpful.
One tactic that i have noticed is people who put up multiple listings for the same used book. It is aggravating to other sellers to see listing after listing for the same book. But for those using the tactic it must be pretty effective, because it makes it harder for the buyer from seeing listings on the bottom. Unless the condition of the book is different, I find this a questionable tactic.
Getting a positive seller rating is also key, because it helps distinguish you and reassure the customer. You can do that by prompt shipping in well padded containers, and sending an email upon receipt of order advising about shipping details. Finally, put a hand written note in with the order thanking them and telling them how to contact you if there are probems. WIth all that service, it is not too much to ask them to give feedback if satisfied, and you can tell them how to do that.
