I have been working in many aspects of the entertainment industry since I was a child on stage in New York. For many years I made my living as an actress in theater, TV and film and eventually I began writing, directing and teaching. I write screenplays, plays, and episodic television, as well as essays and a memoir. As the Creative Director of the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre, I designed curriculum and hired staff for a theater school for children and adults, as well as outreach programs in local schools and juvenile detention centers. I taught screen writing at Stanford University Continuing Studies Program and continue to teach writing workshops privately and at conferences around the country.

  • Go to childreninfilm.com for a list of agents who represent children and for guidelines and rules pertaining to working with children in the industry. I don't have personal experience with this, but my advice is to be very careful and to accompany your child to all meetings and auditions. Be sure to check into an agent's track record in the industry. If there is none, steer clear.
  • Shara, anyone can go to the Association of Talent Agents at agentsassociation.com to check on the legitimacy of anyone claiming to be an agent, especially when children are involved. Obviously, never give out your phone number or address. Ask for as much information as you need to feel comfortable. If need be, you can call Disney to verify that certain project is currently casting.
