  • Susan, thanks for your comment. I actually think that a lack of possibilities for one's contribution to his company/work, is (if not the) main reasons for people moving on to another company (or another type of work). There are 2 types of employees: Those who work for the money and those who work for the challenge and personal goals. And only the latter is one that can be trusted with a substantial amount of responsibilty. It is therefore crucial to give employees a broader perspective of why they are needed for the company and how they really make things happen. Even for a 10 hour cleaning women, there can be such a perspective. I tend to call it "playgrounds". For instance, if you would ask your cleaning women (or man) if she/he could assist you in deciding on which coffee machine to buy for the office, you would certainly make her day and probably even get some good advice on which machines leave a lot of mess and which not. Give them a chance to unfold and they will be more than happy to do so. If not, then you'll know you are dealing with type 1 of employee. You got to pay him good money to get him performing. Better yet, ask him to leave. That would ultimately save you from any more worries. If you would like to take this conversation further, I am always happy to do so.
