Good points, Scott, especially about affiliate marketing. I managed affiliate campaigns for an online magazine years back and although they didn't generate quite as much revenue as the site's banners, they were a pretty successful venture. In my experience, Amazon is a site owner's best bet; the fact that it's a well-known brand that consumers are already likely to buy from gives sites an edge. The company's Associates program used to be limited to books, but now sites can feature items from any number of product categories (the newest is automotive, products from which I'm currently promoting on my own site).
Regarding your other point, the beauty of SEO is that good site content -- content that's well written, descriptive, and rich with keywords and terms relating to your business, product, or service -- is looked at favorably by search engines, whether additional SEO efforts are being implemented or not. So paying attention to site copy can actually pay off where search engine rankings are concerned as well.
